“The 10 Commandments”

Exodus 20:1–17 (NASB)

1 Then God spoke all these words, saying, 2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 3 “You shall have no other gods before Me. 4 “You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. 5 “You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, 6 but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. 7 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain. 8 “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 “Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath of the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you. 11 “For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and made it holy. 12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you. 13 “You shall not murder. 14 “You shall not commit adultery. 15 “You shall not steal. 16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

The Lord is our God, the Lord is one! 5 “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 “These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. 7 “You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. 8 “You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. 9 “You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Romans 3:28 (NASB)

28 For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law.

Ephesians 2:8–9 (NASB)

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

The 10 Commandments Reflect God’s Character.

They are HIS statutes… They are HIS commandments (v. 2)

They Reflect Who God is:

God is Love

Matthew 22:36–40 (NASB)

36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And He said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 “This is the great and foremost commandment. 39 “The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 “On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.”

34 “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.

God is Holy.

13 Therefore did that which is good become a cause of death for me? May it never be! Rather it was sin, in order that it might be shown to be sin by effecting my death through that which is good, so that through the commandment sin would become utterly sinful.

7 because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, 8 and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

The 10 Commandments Require Our Compliance.

They are not the 10 considerations. They are the 10 commandments.

Hebrews 12:4–11 (NASB)

6 “These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. 7 “You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. 8 “You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. 9 “You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

James 4:1–11 (NASB)

1 What is the source of quarrels and conflicts among you? Is not the source your pleasures that wage war in your members? 2 You lust and do not have; so you commit murder. You are envious and cannot obtain; so you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures. 4 You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? He who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks against the law and judges the law; but if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge of it.

22 But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.

Philippians 2:13 (NASB)

13 for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.

Philippians 4:13 (NASB)

13 I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.

In Closing:

The commandments reflect the character of God.

We have a good, holy, loving, gracious, merciful and faithful God who gave His Son so that we could have forgiveness of sin, eternal life and restored relationship with God.

The commandments reveal our condition.

5 “…love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

The commandments require our compliance.

Not for salvation, thank God, because no one would ever be saved. They require our compliance because we are to follow Jesus and be like Him and they are a reflection of who He is. And the awesome thing is that God will help us comply when we deny ourselves and rely on Him.

Let’s pray!

…May Your commands be on our hearts. Help us live them out each day. Help us teach them diligently. Remind us to talk about them when we are sitting at home and walking by the way, when were lying down to go to sleep and again when we wake up. Help us be a reflection of You Lord. May our character be like Your’s. Show us our condition and lead us to repentance where we need it. We ask this in the name of Your Son, Jesus, Amen!
